The certified registered nurse first assistant (CRNFA) is a technically skilled and highly educated professional who renders direct patient care as part of the peri-operative health team. In the operating room, the CRNFA functions interdependently with the surgeon as a first assistant to him/her. Through post nursing education, the CRNFA acquires skills, knowledge, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient. Scope of practice includes handling tissue, using instruments and providing exposure, suturing and tying, providing hemostasis, wound closure and infection control.
In addition to assisting in surgery, the CRNFA is involved in the pre-operative and post-operative phases of patient care. These include performing history and physicals, pre-operative assessments, ordering appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests, post-operative rounds and communication with the attending surgeon. CRNFAs who are employed by a surgeon may also see patients in the office setting.
Physicians and institutional employers in all surgical settings and specialties recognize the quality and value of the services provided by CRNFAs. CRNFAs are nationally recognized by the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Operating Room Nurses, the American Nurses Association, and all State Boards of Nursing.
