Question Oncology Calculations

Greetings!

I am a new grad and I just got a wonderful job at a private hematology and oncology practice. I am beginning my orientation next week and I plan on brushing up on my math just in case there is a pop quiz (cruel after just taking the NCLEX, don't you think?)

Anyway, aside from BSA, IV drips, and general ratio/proportions, is there anything else commonly used in Oncology?

Thank you in advance.

Smile Re: Oncology Calculations

You will also need to know how to calculate Carboplatin doses based on area under the curve(AUC). I have a great reference for oncology nursing, it's 2006 Oncology Nursing Drug Handbook by Wilkes. It's not a pocket guide but it has everything in there including nursing diagnosis r/t each drug. Have you taken the ONS chemotherapy course? An oncologists office can be very fast paced and you really need to become very comfortable with these drugs. Good luck! I love oncology nursing, I wouldn't do anything else.

Lightbulb Re: Oncology Calculations

I have heard of some great software that is used to calculate chemo orders.
I think it is called IntelliDose.
My friend worked at a practice that used it and she loved it.
