Question NG tube for Esophageal Cancer Pt?

Hi,

I read from my textbook saying that pt who had esophagectomy might require NG tube...how is that possible? Can someone please explain?

Thanks in advance!

Re: NG tube for Esophageal Cancer Pt?

When they remove the esophagus the usually put an artificial esophagus there. The tube would be in place for suction or feeding, but it wouldn't be long term, they would have a PEG instead.

When you ask, why it's possible, it's because they don't close off the holes (stomach and throat) they put an artificial passage there.

Re: NG tube for Esophageal Cancer Pt?

they pull up the stomach to make an esophagus, and not all of the esophagus is always taken out. The NG is placed in surgery, and they usually have a peg, j-tube and drains such as chest tubes and jp's. They require a lot of care.

Re: NG tube for Esophageal Cancer Pt?

Yup. The NG tube is usually for decompression / suction after surgery until the pt is passing gas and/or stooling NOT for feeding or meds.
