Question New Grad wants to be an Oncology RN

I will be graduating in May 2008 with a BSN (God willin' and the creek don't rise!). From the jobs I've located so far in oncology, it seems that they require 3 years of prior med/surg or inpatient RN experience. I don't have that experience; however, I can't discount the fact that I was an outpatient scheduling secretary for a major cancer ctr in NH for pts on clinical trials. I am at least familiar with the names of various chemos; what to look for in labs (i.e. WBCs, plts, etc.). Is anyone aware of any hospitals in the nursing compact that are willing to train a highly motivated, critical thinking new grad? Thanks in advance.

If the 3 yrs requirement is true with you, I'm damn lucky to just get hired as an oncology RN. I'm a new grad. I don't know what I did, but they called me within 2 hrs from interviewing to say I have the job. The nursing shortage must be crazy here where I am. I'm very nervous but excited at the same time. If a new grad like me can get the job, you can too... Good luck to you

Grumpy, where is la la land? LOL!! But seriously... I've found a couple out there -- St. Luke's in Boise, ID and St. Mary's in Grand Junction, CO, both of which I've applied to. Phone interview w/ St.Luke's on Friday --yeah! It's a start.

I am also a new grad come May, 2008. I had an interview yesterday for an oncology BMT floor and was hired on the spot. So, there are hospitals out there that will hire new grads. Good luck!!

Re: New Grad wants to be an Oncology RN

I was just accepted to a med/surg/tele oncology floor. It's a 42 bed unit among a 300 bed hospital in AZ. I figgered I could get in the med/surg stuff along w/ onc -- the pay is sweet, too. Thanks for everyone's support.

Same thing happened to me. I applied last Thurs. evening; got called to set up an interview on Fri; interviewed on Tues and 20 min. after the brief phone interview, I was made an offer! They're not too desperate in AZ or anything, huh?
