Interleukin

Hello I work at a melanoma floor and we administer interleukin. It is never administered with steroids or lasix but no one ever explained to me why. I looked it up online but to no avail. I just need the reason why (cellular level). I heard that steroids counter acts the effect of the IL2. Thanks!

IL2 acts by stimulating your body's immune system and killer T cells to attack cancer cells. Steroids will suppress your immune system thereby decreasing the intended effects of IL-2

Re: Interleukin

One of the major side effects of aldesleukin is capillary leak syndrome. Pt's recieving IL-2 often experience severe 3rd spacing- it seems tempting to give lasix to relieve the edema. However, CLS can cause hypotension often requiring pressor support. Lasix will only further decrease intravascular volume and worsen hypotension. It is also hard on the kidneys- I've had a few pts need short term dialysis after high dose therapy.
Also, make sure your pt's are not using any creams with steriods in them. This therapy can cause pruritis. Many pt's do not realize OTC creams have steriods in them.
