CNA in Oncology

Hello, I am a CNA student completing who is in the last month of the program. I've been looking through each department to see what would interest me as far working environment, duties/responsibilities. I was just curious, in an Oncology department, what is the CNA's responsibilities? I heard that an Oncology department is more of a clinic environment as opposed to a ward, and it is only open until a certain time. Any help? Thank a bunch.

Re: CNA in Oncology

Hello there =)

I work in a Women's Surgical Oncology unit and I love it. Its definately not more like a clinic..but that's possibly because its surgical oncology and not medical oncology?

Our duties include the same things as other units in our hospital. Vital signs, patient care, intake/output, taking patients on walks, helping them with ADL's, etc. Our unit is open 24 hours a day like every other unit. One thing that I love about my unit is the bonds that I form with our patients who come in often. Some of our ovarian/cervical/uterine cancer women are in pretty frequently and its really nice to get to know them.

I absolutely love working in Oncology. It is my first and only CNA job I've had and I've learned SO much that will help me as a nurse. I recommend it!
