I am going to start a new job next week as an occupational health nurse. I know part of what I need to learn is FMLA and Worker's Comp. Does anyone have any good websites or references? More importantly, is anyone else going on the cruise for continuing education in November???

FMLA is a HR nightmare, usually best left to the HR people. WC is usually taught at a three to five day course that will cert you for your state.

Thanks for the heads up. It seems my new job is unusual in the fact that it is the OHN's job to track and deal with the FMLA as well. There is a consulting company and a risk manager that make decisions but it is the nurse that monitors leave, initiates paperwork and try to get all the information.

Certainly there is usually some interaction from the OHN in FMLA, and I too have seen where the whole program is handled in the clinic. Just be aware that it, like WC, has a lot of caveats to it which it is best to understand at the beginning. Find yourself an expert that you can call on before voicing a decision, it will save you and the employee grief afterwards.

Ask your local BWC if they have educational opportunities you can attend. In Ohio, we are sent by the BWC Division of Safety and Hygiene, a Safety Services Catalog which has info on the Safety Congress and Expo, Training opportunities, safety councils, technical support, videos available, library services, OSHA on-site, and Safety Consultations available in your area.

I have attended a "boo-koo" number of FREE inservices over the years.
