The best thing to do since it's a speciality would be to talk to an advisor at your school, who could help place you in the right classes you would need to take. Good Luck!

Actually, your basic nursing school is all you need for the moment. If you want to - just for the joy of it - becoming a doula might give you some extra insight, but it's not required.

I have one more birth and then I am certified. I also took a Beginning Midwifery course with a LM that I am trying to get college credit for (her students have done it in the past but everyone has to petition). I am also doing a preceptorship this summer though another state college; I will get to follow an OB nurse around and get one-on-one training. I am super excited for this! Many OB places want students that have had a preceptorship; my school does not offer this so I had to go out and find my own. Anything that you can put on your resume that someone does not have (that JUST took the required nursing classes) betters your chances.

While I was in nursing school, I become a doula. I went through DONA, but there's also ALACE and CAPPA.

Being a doula definitely made my resume look competitive for L and D positions.
