Hi, I have heard two conflicting stories. One is that L/D jobs are not hard to find, another says that they are scare. Also I have heard that L/D travel nurse jobs are scare and some say that it is one of the specialties most needed in travel. What do you think? Have any of you traveled in this specialty?

I'm not a traveler, but since no one else is responding I thought I'd tell you what I've seen as a staff nurse. I have worked at two southern California hospitals in L&D. Both used travelers on the night shift. We currently have one and are expecting another soon. All of the travelers we get have been doing it a while and seem to have no problems finding assignments all over the country. I think they are especially needed in California and in the more populated Eastern cities.

I love getting good travelers. I learn a lot from them and it helps gain perspective about how others do things. I hope to travel myself some day when my kids are older and the hubby is retired. Ain't nursing grand??

Hi Janey, Thanks for your post! Yes, it does seem as though california uses alot of travelers even L&D! Thank you for your positive reply! I hope to travel one day also, but first I have to graduate Nursing school and get some experience under my belt.

I'm an OB traveler, mainly L&D, but also do units where I do PP and occasionally nsy and have been traveling for 8 years now. I've had no problem keeping steadily employed, always have had a new contract lined up before leaving the last one. I actually have more trouble taking time off as they are always wanting someone sooner!

I have done contracts in eastern WA in the tri-cities area and would say that there is one hospital in the area I would avoid - the only time in 8 years I have broken a contract. If you are looking at hospitals there, feel free to email me for more details.

Hi,
Travel nursing offers a tremendous number of jobs for experienced L and D nurses. It is often hard to get into L and D. I worked on Post Partum and each time they were busy I floated there--best of luck.
