Question Stethoscopes....

Do you carry one? There is only one nurse that works our unit that carries hers. There is usually one in all the LDR's (on the warmer... a cheapie). I usually grap it for admission assessment and if there is any problems... should I be carrying my own?

I always carry mine. I dont want to put my ear in something that has had other peoples in it. Sometimes you dont have time to clean it with a alcohol prep. I use a Littman, very good brand, you can hear very good with it.

How could you get thru a shift without one? Every patient should have at least one manual bp done by the nurse every day, and we need to be assessing and re-assessing lungs, heart, bowels. Can't be done any other way that I know of.

I did say that this was L&D right? We do q30min vitals.... but we have automatic everything and to be honest... I don't think we have a manual BP cuff on the floor. Like I said we have a cheapie stethoscope in every room and that's what I've been using to assess. I think one of the reasons that the hospital puts one in every room is to control infection etc.... I just know that no one on our unit brings their own.....

I like the idea of hospitals providing the stethoscopes in every patient room to control infection/passing germs between patients, etc. Great idea fourbirds4me!

I carry my own steth, but hate thinking about what could be cultured off of it in any given day.
