Talking SOS all OB nurses!

Help, I am a senior nursing student trying to complete my OB rotation, and I need help! I am really having a hard time with coming up with appropiate NANDA nursing diagnosis for normal healthy infants. I would greatly appreciate any help and advice you experieced OB nurses have that are familiar with NANDA,NOC, and NIC. Thanks ahead of time, I know you guys will come through for me!

Re: SOS all OB nurses!

Just finished my OB rotation. Healthy newborns won't have many diagnoses, mostly risk fors. Here are some we have used:
  • Readiness for enhanced parenting r/t bonding and attachment amb parents attentiveness and cuddling of child
  • Readiness for enhanced nutrition r/t infant’s viability outside mother’s womb amb baby’s rooting, suckling and swallowing sounds
  • Effective breastfeeding r/t infant’s successful latching on and positioning amb baby’s swallowing sounds and wet and dirty diapers every three hours
  • Risk for infection r/t inadequate acquired immunity
  • Risk for hyperthermia r/t depleted sources of subcutaneous fat
  • Risk for suffocation r/t reduced motor abilities
  • Risk for aspiration r/t depressed cough/gag reflex
  • Risk for sudden infant death syndrome r/t presence of risk factors such as sleeping in prone position, loose articles in sleep environment and infant overheating
  • Risk for delayed development r/t affect of racial/ethnic differences between mother of Hispanic origin and American father
  • Risk for impaired parent/infant/child attachment r/t anxiety associated with new father’s role

Good luck. Happy assessing and careplanning!

Re: SOS all OB nurses!

Your OB text should already have help for you in this area.

Thanks for your suggestions guys! And smiling blue eyes thanks for your suggestion regarding the textbook! Actually I posted on here because my text is rather vague on specific diagnosis. Thanks again

Re: SOS all OB nurses!

My old OB text had pull-out careplans in it. I am surprised yours was not more helpful. Anyhow good luck!
