Does anybody know how much certified nurse midwives make. I don't have a clue what the range is. Thanks.

Certainly the salary will depend on where you live, your experience, the job description, the call time, and the cost of living. I would think -- generally speaking it could range anyway from $58,000 - $80,000.

Many docs give "baby bonuses" which will increase your salary with each baby you catch (giving you the incentive to take more call).

Any more ideas?

Is your malpractice usually paid for? How much call time do you think CNM's have on average?

mitchsmom:

That also depends on the practice that you are in and the patient load. If you run your own birth center (probably with 1 or 2 other midwives) your call time will be divided up three ways.

If you work in a MD/CNM practice catching babies at a hospital, well then your call time may be split up between the MDs and the CNMs. I am familiar with working in the office 3 days a week and call time on those nights & every third or four wkend. But this also depends on how many CNMs are in the practice. B/c, I will tell you, MDs don't come out on wkends unless emergency.

Malpractice insurance is generally paid by the practice. If you own a free-standing BC, your insurance will come out of your expenses.

Hope this helps.

LuvsOB, try salary.com or monster.com. They'll give you the average range for where you live. Sorry I don't have any information on malpractice insurance. There's a post I've just responded to in the last few minutes which has me kind of bummed. It's about how malpractice rates have forced the closures of some big name birth centers on the east coast among other places.

How long will it take me???

gij1--
If you have a BSN already, it will take an additional 2 years. However, it took me 3 and 1/2 years, but normally it is a 2 year program. I did work FT as a RN for the first semester while in school. Then 2nd sem, I cut back to PT. By the 3rd semester I was tried PRN work. And when I started my internship/clinical training I didn't work at all.

this also depends on the school and the program.

The practice that I went to to have my children has two docs and two CNM's. As a patient, you get your choice of who you want. With my first, I had the dr. because the midwives were just coming on the scene. With my last two, I chose the midwives The dr. was called only because I had a big baby and he wasn't in the correct position. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been there at all. I would LOVE to work for a practice like this and quite frankly am hoping one of the midwives will retire by the time I have my degree!
