Protein S deficiency in pregnancy...

I am a student nurse graduating this May, so i do have medical knowledge. but when a pregnant friend mentioned to me that when her AFP labs were drawn, they found she has a protein S deficiency and put her on heparin BID. (she doesn't know the dosage)
anyhow, honestly, i'd never heard of protein S deficiency and the websites i looked up weren't very specific to pregnancy.
she's seen a perinatologist, and was told they need to know 12 hours before she's going to go into labor (???? how do you know that) so all the heparin can get out of her system before delivery. again, she's non medical, and doesn't really understand the disease at all.
but having never heard of it, i wanted to learn more about it, and have found nothing really specific to it and pregnancy.
so if you know anything about it, i'd love to hear how it affects pregnancy.
thanks!
love, rose
