Just wanted to give an intro since I started replying.

I am an L&D nurse in Ohio, working 12 hour night shifts. Just switched from days, ugh, was that first night hard.

My goal was always midwifery, but after hearing some of the schedules of coworkers who are in CNM programs now, maybe I'll just stick with floor nursing.

I have three little ones myself. My boys are 6 and 3, and my daughter is 8 months. Looking forward to chatting and learning from you all.

I a new graduate RN who has been working L&D since May...

I too just started nights, about three weeks into it, it does get better Just be careful on the drive home.

Just read your post--I am not a nurse--YET!! I just found this website and am reading through a lot of the posts. I have just recently decided to go to nursing school next fall. I am 35 with 2 kids (9 and 11) and have decided it is time to do something that I have always wanted to do. My thoughts right now are on becoming a L & D nurse. At this point ( from a totally outside view) this seems like a perfect fit for me. A couple of questions for you. I have some college behind me and I am going to try and get some of the prerequisites that I lack finished before next fall when I want to start nursing school. What is a reasonable timetable for me to be in school until I can be a L & D nurse? I will be able to go to school full time. Is the job everything you thougt it would be? Any insight would be great!

I love my job. But then, there is nowehere else that I ever wanted to be. You can get an ADN in about 2 years, usually 2 1/2 once you factor in the prereqs. A BSN will take you four years. ANd I can tell you, there is no difference in pay for new grads, regardless of degree.

Midwifery school would completely do you in at this stage of your life with three little ones. Enjoy being an L&D RN and leave the job behind when you go home after work.

LDRP RN for 15 years now. I know how hard our CNM's work. I woldn;t go back to school now even if I had the time and money. As far as I am concerned, doing what I do nopw gives me the best of both worlds!

CNM's where I work put in at LEAST as long hours as our OB's do....

for less pay and oftentimes, less appreciation/respect by MD's that back them up.

If you have little kids, yes, it would be VERY difficult to do CNM school at this point. Wait til they are older and you can put in the all-nighters and daytime office hours THEY do.

Thanks for the advice. I'm beginning to feel that way. Now is not the time to go back to school. I think I may be just as happy where I'm at for a long time.
