Need some advice: I'm scared

I have been irregular all my adult life and we had given up on ever having a baby. I just found out yesterday that I am pregnant. While this should be a happy occasion there is a large part of both of us that is very scared right now. I have been taking a Cat. X med that I had stopped when we were actively trying , but started again earlier this year. Any thoughts on this? The med is Lipitor. I don't know exactly how far I am, but the HCG says near the end of the first trimester. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am in no way qualified to speak as to the effects on your unborn baby this medication would have in the 1st trimester. I would URGE you STRONGLY to discuss this with your doctor right away so he/she can discuss risks/fears you have.

I am so sorry for your fear and trepidation concerning this pregnancy. In your shoes, I would be concerned, too, but armed with knowledge, I would be much more able to cope with the situation and any decisions I would make in the future. I wish you the best of health and the best outcome in your situation, whatever that may be. Please let us know how you are and what happens!

As SmilingBlueEyes said, your doctor can best advise you and discuss the situation. But as you know, Lipitor is contraindicated for both pregnant and nursing mothers, and there is a potential hazard to the baby. How much of a hazard it is, I don't know, or what type of damage it can cause.

Is there any way you can see your doctor sooner? If that isn't possible, you can contact the company that makes Lipitor, and maybe speak with a doctor or nurse there. The important thing is that you speak with someone who is knowledgeable about Lipitor and what effect it may have on a growing fetus.

I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted.

ANOTHER IDEA!!! call a pharmacist. THEY are REAL expert resources in telling what meds can/will do in certain cases!! Don't wait til Tuesday----get an answer from an Pharm or your doctor TODAY!!! I am pulling for ya, hon!!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't drive yourself crazy while you wait, that's not good for the baby either. Don't 'borrow trouble'!

SmilingBlueEyes, THANK YOU!!! It did not occur to me to call the pharmacist. I just did and it took a load off my mind. The Cat. X rating is because of abnormalities in rats but only one bad outcome in a human.

We still need to make some decisions and I will insist on an amnio (doc will probably want one anyway since I'm 41), but we can rest a little easier until my appointment and start enjoying this pregnancy! Again, thanks so much and thanks to the other responders for your support.

I am relieved to hear this. I wanted to tell you the same thing. Categories are usualy based on ANIMAL studies, not human, so not always what they say can occur does. BUT I did NOT want to speak out of turn or offer false hope. I hope this indeed took a load off your mind. Now, breathe deeply and try to relax til you see the doctor tomorrow. I do really wish you the best!

Don't know why, but when reading your post, the first thought that came to me after stopping and saying a prayer for your baby, your hubby and you was "They are going to have a beautiful baby girl!"

Stay prayerful and keep the faith. Congrats on your wonderful news!

I knew that most reasons for category ratings were based on animal studies, but I thought that if a med made it into the X category it involved humans as well. As for the one human documented, she was also taking methamphetamines, so who knows just what her baby's problems were related to?

I'm not going in the other direction and thinking I'm completely safe now, but I can at least relax and wait until the amnio results. It looks like my age will be more of a factor than anything else. I'm already nearly 17 weeks by sono, so I won't have to wait too long to get the amnio done.
