My pt. punched her SO...

Last weekend I took care of a pt. who had had her 2nd baby. Her and her SO were a little different but pleasant to me. When I woke her at midnt. to do her vitals, she got real snippy with her SO, telling him to take her baby, and don't squish her boob...he ended up squishing her boob so she punched him in the face. Not like a tap, like a full on punch. I didnt say a word, just kind of looked at him in my peripheral vision. He had no reaction other than to say she was cranky. I got the feeling more might have happened if I hadnt been standing there.

I documented it real well, but what do you guys do in this situation??

Re: My pt. punched her SO...

Its funny how we can view things differently when the woman is the aggressor and it is the man who is being abused. If the woman had been punched in the phase I bet you would have called security, attempted to remove her from the room, interviewed her, placed a social work consult, notified the doctor, etc, etc. Abuse is abuse is abuse--regardless of which gender is the abuser. His nonchalant indicates that it was likely not the first time she had laid a hand on him.

Talk about pp hormones!!! Imagine how she was in labor
I'd probably tell all the other nurses then refer for MSW consult, I'm sorry I can't help it !!! She did warn him!!

if the shoe was on the other foot and HE had warned HER, then punched her, would that have been OK??

I agree with a previous poster, abuse is abuse no matter who throws the punch.

Re: My pt. punched her SO...

Oh so it's ok that the guy gets hit? Really? So I can punch my female nurse in the face if I warn her not to touch my foley?

Just making sure it's ok for me to do it too.

I don't believe hitting the nurse was part of the scenario,

I also didn't think the patient was right, what I did think was that the context of the story IS FUNNY. pp, raging hormones, don't squish my boob etc. I'm sure a LOT of people( especially anyone who has had a baby and yes, even men who have been the recipient of crazy hormones) would find it funny, and I wouldn't have slinked in the corner of the room at the LEAST I would have confronted/admonished the behavior, made sure the husband was ok, informed the resident and MSW, I'm on the fence on calling security, if HE wanted something done or if she was out of control, without a doubt, good grief, If no one else can find the scenario funny, well guess I'm the last nurse on earth who still has her sense of humor , Yeah for me
