A senior member of mamily, whom I suspect is in the early stages of Alzeimer's, told me today that her "hips were hurting" so she gave herself a Lysol Douche. She said that she had used it during the 40's as birth-control, and she thought this might make her feel better. She said she is feeling better now. I am really afraid that she is going to hurt herself. She said that she didn't use very much, but I am still worried. Ever heard of this?
Yes, it was a common practice back then, according to my mother and grandmother. In fact, I once saw an ad in an old Reader's Digest advertising Lysol douche, which depicted an angry housewife turning away from her husband and said something like this: "Laura's marriage is suffering from a new coldness. Could it be that she needs to be fresher?". Neither of my female ancestors would admit to having done this, but it seems to me that a Lysol douche would be about as pleasant as pouring kerosene over an open wound. OUCH.
I can't believe they addressed such "marital issues" in print back then! Wow!
As for the baking soda and peroxide, those are main ingredients (along with fluoride) in a LOT of commercial toothpastes. And Peroxyl is, of course, a peroxide solution...
There used to be a product on the market with a picture on the bottle of a nurse in a cap.
It wasnt lysol but simimlar stuff. One could wash the floor, the car, and then douche with it. I last saw it for sale in the early 80's
