LPN Lactation Consultants

Hi there!

I was wondering if LPNs could become lactation consultants? I am very interested in this subject.

Thanks,
Kala

You don't have to be any sort of nurse. However, the prerequisites in all nursing programs are similar to those for lactation consultatants.

Wildchipmunk is right, you do not have to be a nurse at all to become a LC. Nursing background helps, though. There are several pathways to becoming a LC and you have to have logged a certain number of hours counseling, demonstrating, etc. regarding breastfeeding. How many hours you need depends on the pathway you take. This will make more sense once you see the website & the different pathways.

Good luck!

Re: LPN Lactation Consultants

I know this does not answer the OPs questions, but the best lactation consultant I ever had was the housekeeper at the hospital I delivered baby #3 in. he was the 1st child I had attempted to breast feed and I just could not get the hang of it, I had met with the lactation consultant and the nurses tried to help me, but it was hurting so bad and i was so stressed out, here comes the lady to take out my trash and i have tears in my eyes and she asks how I am doing and I tell her, "Oh OK but I just cant seem to get this nursing thing down". she comes over and says "Oh girl your doing it all wrong" she gathers some pillows, props the baby up, pulls over a trash can to prop my feet on, positions the baby just so and gave me great tips. My only regret is that I never sent her a thank you card!!!

I had already decided I was going to quit till I met her, and I am happy to say I nursed him for almost a year, and then next baby I nursed with ease.

Hats off to housekeeping!!!
