I am a PNP in primary care. Our office is very small, and I think it would be helpful if we could have a lactation consultant. I do a lost of teaching concerning this with new moms, but I would really like to be one officially. Is this possible to do on-line and is it something you would recommend as do-able if you aren't going to be practicing in a hospital?
There are several pathways to becoming an LC, so how many hours of teaching you need in order to take the exam depends on which pathway(s) you are eligible to take. This sounds confusing but it's really not once you look at the website. The exam, I believe, is administered at a testing site.
As a hospital-based doula, I took the Certified Lactation Counselor
workshop. It was 5 days long and very helpful. Unless you want to get a degree, this is a great way to learn how to help moms with breastfeeding.
