hey everyone
this is my first time ever trying this whole website thing out.....hope it works!
to start off....I need to find a person out there in the world that works as a L&D R.N.
I am doing a big huge project on this career because I am thinking of going into this for a living.
so I am going to ask you 20 simple questions about the job itself and the education required mkay?
by the way...I need your answers by this coming Friday, January 13th, 2006....sorry about the short notice.
so here are the questions.....

1. How long have you been involved with this area of work?
2. What do you like best about your job?
3. Did anyone in specific influence you to become a labor and delivery R.N?
4. Has there been one specific patient or experience during your working experience that has made it all worth while?
5. Does the career have the same expectations that you imagined before you entered it?
6. Are you a parent yourself, and does that change your view on this career at all?
7. What college did you attend?
8. Had you planned on studying to be a labor and delivery R.N in the beginning?
9. Are the hours required for this career acceptable?
10. What is your hourly wage?
11. About how many hours do you work a week?
12. Does this career impact your family and outside life a lot? Does it affect it in a good or bad way?
13. If you could go back in time, would you still choose this career?
14. Do you see yourself more as a "people person" or a business person in this career?
15. Would you say the annual salary for this career is more suitable for a single person or a family?
16. Are your patients usually around the same age or does it vary?

19. I am a "people person", outgoing, hardworking, trustworthy, fascinated by the human body and I love medicine...would I make it in this health career, do you think?

Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

1. How long have you been involved with this area of work?

I have been a labor and delivery nurse 8 years total. I graduated nursing school in 1997.



Being there for the births of new babies, families, lives is very powerful and life-affirming. This is a privelege to me.

3. Did anyone in specific influence you to become a labor and delivery R.N?

Yes my labor/delivery nurses who gave me amazing care w/the birth of my first child. I wanted to be JUST LIKE THEM.

4. Has there been one specific patient or experience during your working experience that has made it all worth while?

Each day I get a thank you or a warm hug makes it all worthwhile. Trite but true. I live for taking care of patients they way I would my own family or friends.

5. Does the career have the same expectations that you imagined before you entered it?

Yes and no. I have all the joy and more----but the liability and frustation of being short-staffed can take it away some days. I never thought I would spend SO MUCH TIME doing PAPERWORK. It's horrendous.


6. Are you a parent yourself, and does that change your view on this career at all?

I am a parent of two amazing kids; they have not changed my views really---unless you count the birth of my son and the wonderful care I got being the reason I entered nursing in the first place.

7. What college did you attend?

I prefer to tell you privately, if that is ok. PM me if you wish to know.

8. Had you planned on studying to be a labor and delivery R.N in the beginning?

Yes right from the start-----I never wavered in my desire to be an L/D nurse.

9. Are the hours required for this career acceptable?

They vary by hospital and unit. I work part time myself, only Friday nights usually for 12 hour shifts. I also fill in for vacations and short staffed times. The shifts are 12 hours where I am. Some places, they are 8.

10. What is your hourly wage?

Straight-up 27.50 an hour---BUT I add considerably to that in the form of Perdiem, evening and weekend differentials, not to mention double time if called in to work on a day off.



11. About how many hours do you work a week?

Roughly 12-24.

12. Does this career impact your family and outside life a lot? Does it affect it in a good or bad way?

Nope my work stays at work. Once, I home I am with my family and leave it there.......I keep home and work life separate. It's critical to avoiding burnout; I believe this with every fiber of my being..

13. If you could go back in time, would you still choose this career?

Yes. Again and again.

14. Do you see yourself more as a "people person" or a business person in this career?

Total People Person all the way.

15. Would you say the annual salary for this career is more suitable for a single person or a family?

Hard to say frankly. You should do some research and decide for yourself. The way I work, it works well for me.

16. Are your patients usually around the same age or does it vary?

It varies cause I take care of OB and GYN patients, so they can vary in age form about 12-13 to over 85.

17. Is your family proud of the choice you made for a career? Are you proud?

I think they are proud; my kids seem to be and my husband is totally supportive. I am very proud of what I do; I take great pride in my work.


18. Do you have to be in shape to succeed as an employee in this career?

YES! Mentally, physically and emotionally you need to be in top form. It's the most rigorous work imaginable many days. It will test you in every way.

19. I am a "people person", outgoing, hardworking, trustworthy, fascinated by the human body and I love medicine...would I make it in this health career, do you think?

Based on those, you have a great start.Shadow some nurses in real life to decide for sure, is my best recommendation.

20. What days do you get off? (holidays, weekends etc.)

I work Friday nights. I also am expected to work rotating holidays, e.g. Christmas Eve/Day, New Years' Eve/ Day. This is typical in hospital work. And all employees are expected to work 2 weekends/month.
