Hi, I will be graduating in May of this year. I have an interview for a labor an delivery position at the local hospital. This is the area I am most interested in and I REALLy want this job! Do any of you have any interviewing tips for a GN? Any tips will be helpful. Thanks

First, as a GN they do not expect you to know EVERYTHING, so don't expect that of yourself. Ask about the nurse:Patient ratio, does a clinical ladder exist, will you have a preceptor and for how long, what shift(s) are available. Ask when your health insurance will kick in. Ask how many GN's they hire annually in that department. If it is high then they might have a lot of turnover. You will need to know how many total nurses they have to know if the turnover is high. Good luck! Oh, don't forget to wear decent clothes and smile. It amazes me how many people look like they dropped off here for an interview on their way to go suntan.

Be prepared with questions to ask. Dress professionally. Get a tour of the unit so you can see things in action. And realize that this is a specialty unit and you will need a lot of orientation and training before you will be ready to go out on your own. Be sure to fiind out how long they will orient you to the position. It should be months, not weeks.
