I wanna be a CNM when I grow up. That's the long term goal, though it's not set in stone because I realize my wants may change once I get into clinicals. I'm keeping an open mind about the future but really, right now the whole point of me going into nursing is that I want to go for CNM eventually.

As I understand it, most of the programs prefer you to have L&D, PP, etc. experience prior to your schooling for CNM. Problem is, as you all know, that can be a tough position for a new grad to get. I've read through some of the threads which have asked questions like mine and gleaned a few tips.

I also had an idea on how to get experience -- apprentice with a licensed (homebirth) midwife. I've seen this done before, but am not sure how....risky?....it was. I'd have to check out my potential for liability before I committed. If I were to consider this, it'd be while I was on the waitlist. IOW, nursing education not started yet (well, except I'd have my prereqs done).

Would this help me or hurt me? I realize the birth experiences wouldn't be anything like those at a hospital. I'd be learning about natural births, but wouldn't gain experience with IV antibiotics, EFMs, epidural assitance, all that stuff. Very different model of care. Would it be so different as to actually hurt me? I know there can be very strong anti-homebirth feelings among some nurses.

Well, I am still a student but I can tell you what I am doing to try to get a L & D job. I am a doula, I am also working on Certified Lactation Educator from CAPPA. I am going to a neonatal rescuscutation class next month. I am hoping to get a job at a hospital with an alternative birth center. That's my plan but I don't know how it will work.
