I want to work in L & D need advice

I need some advice. I have had my license for a year did what every body said to do. You need a least 1 year of Med-Surg before you can even get into L & D. Now I have tried all the hospital around my home even one 1 hour away they won't hire on less you have experiecne. Tell me how to get experience if they won't hire. I also found out they just hired GN's. Help please this is what I have wanted to do. Need any advice.

Thanks,
Hollyrobyn

Re: I want to work in L & D need advice

Our unit stopped hiring nurses without L&D experience simply because it was getting logistically ridiculous to orient all the new hires to 2-3 skillsets. Management did make a couple of exceptions recently for nurses with pediatric experience. Is there a children's hospital near you? Working there for 6-12 months might get your foot in the door on L&D.

Just don't give up! You'll get there eventually.

I had similar difficulty getting into OB. Just keep trying!

If you work in a hospital that has OB, introduce yourself to the manager...let her/him know how much you want it!

Another option...if you are sending your resume directly to Human resources, try bypassing them. Sometimes there is a roadblock, and the unit managers never get to see the applications. You could look the hospital up online, and send the manager a resume with a cover letter.

You'll get there...just don't give up!
Good luck!
