How much does a delivery cost in the U.S.?

I am from Canada and we can deliver in a hospital or with a midwife and OHIP covers the cost, although we do pay lots of tax. I am just wondering how much a hospital delivery costs as opposed to a home birth? TIA.

Timely question, actually. I just got back from registering to deliver at a local hospital. With our particular insurance, it will be $200 whether it be a vag delivery or c-section.

On the piece of paper I signed, if for some reason insurance won't cover delivery, it will cost us $11,171 for a vag delivery, or $15,631 for a c-section. This varies all over the US, but this the cost for a city in the Midwestern US, metropolitan area of nearly one million.

Definitely varies... I delivered VBAC in Baltimore 9 years ago to the tune of >$20,000 (but since my husband worked for the hospital, I paid nothing -- best employee health plan ever!!! I just wanted a copy of the bill for his baby book)

I had both my kids at a hospital in a city of approx 1 mil people. My hubby's insurance covered 100%!! We had about as low maintenance as you could get...vag delivery, no epi, no stadol, or anything like that, no pitocin or anything. My 2nd baby was born 40 minutes after arriving and we stayed in the hospital for 36 hours...the grand total...$5,000.

Re: How much does a delivery cost in the U.S.?

Hi,

I am a licensed midwife and a registered nurse in San Diego attending homebirths. The global maternity fee for prenatal, homebirth and postpartum/newborn care, excluding labwork, ranges from $3500-$4300, depending on the provider one chooses. The primary midwife also pays out-of-pocket for a second midwife to attend the birth so that there are two trained midwives in attendance. Since the vast majority of births are completed at home, the savings is substantial. Most insurance providers (non-HMO) reimburse the client for the fees.

One hospital here has a cash special. I believe it was under $6000 for a vag delivery.

My first child was born at Fort Bragg, NC. It cost us $15.00 (cost of food), my second - Troy Beaumont in Michigan - $0 as I worked there at the time. Oops! Sorry! Actually $10.00 for my 1st OB appointment. That's what insurance is for.

Re: How much does a delivery cost in the U.S.?

When i had my 2nd son 4 yrs ago, it was around $8000 for a vaginal delivery w/o a epi. It cost us $2000 for doctor charges, lab, u/s and hosptial charges after my insurance paid. I spent 3 1/2 days after delivery and they kept my son for 2 extra days for jaundice. I had quite a few trips to L/D for preterm labor and that cost included all of those trips plus all of the meds given to me to stop labor.
