How do you get into this kind of nursing?

I'm not intentionally trying to sound like a complete smart-@$$, but I really don't know how else to answer. Nursing school. Then apply for a job in an OB department.

But you don't have to have any special qualifications, classes, or certifications?

As you enter OB you will have to take continuing education, like Neonatal resuscitation and ACLS, etc. And fetal heart monitoring classes. Yes there are many but you will do these primarily AFTER you enter nursing itself.

I spent 4 years in nursing school, graduated in may and got into a maternity internship. This way we're working under a mentor for 18 weeks, so we're not just thrust into the fire, but we get to ease into it gently.

We are scheduled for a monitoring class, but the hospital pays for it. I'm signing up for PALS (pediatric advanced life support) which the hospital also pays for. I'm going on for my BSN/MSN and then on to my midwifery certification. The hospital pays $5200 a year towards my education.

However, many hospitals won't take new grads into maternity. It's too risky. Here in NJ you can be sued until that child is 21. We were told about a 2 year old dying recently in a bathtub and the authorities went all the way down to the hospital level to find out what the nurses taught that mother when she was there. Amazing.

Good luck with school. You'll be doing rotations in every specialty. You may get to maternity and hate it, you might get there and love it.
