I am in the process of writing a new policy for Emergency Cesarean Sections in the event all 4 main OR's are in use. We do not have a section room in our L&D unit and a minor procedure room in the OR has been designated as the "back up". Deos anyone have a policy of sorts or know where I can get one so I do not have to "re-invent the wheel." Would appreciate any and all suggestions or help.

Hopefully someone can help you. We have our own 2 OR suites on the unit and main OR is only used if our two rooms are in use or otherwise unavailable.

We always have 1 OR room available at all times, and the emergency carts (for different types of emergencies) are lined up outside the back door of it. This is also the c-section back-up room or stat section room. L and D has 2 OR rooms.

Having a minor procedure room for a back up for c-sections is a disaster waiting to happen, and boy does that need revised.

Your policy should cover what room will be used
What equipment will always be in the room
What equipment will be sent to the room
Who will staff the room

For example: "Room 15 will be used for emergency Cbirths when all other rooms are in use. Equipment that will always be available in the room include 2 sets of Cbirth instruments, 1 hysterectomy tray and a sterile Cbirth linen pack. (Emergency baby stuff and armbands/paperwork would also be good to keep in the room too). Equipment that will be sent to the room include infant warmer, scale (if you weigh babies before they go to the nursery),recusitation cart for NB, etc... The room will be staffed by a qualified scrub person and an RN from OB who has experience circulating (or the OR staff or whoever).
Make sure you have oxygen sources for mom and baby, suction for mom and baby, emergency drugs for mom and baby.
One BIG point. You have to be able to put someone asleep in this room so you have to have all the anesthesia equipment. This will require an OK from your anesthesia dept as well.
