A neighbor of mine was pregnant and due April 10th. She went in on Saturday with contractions. The contractions stopped after she arrived at the hospital. The doctor told her if she did not deliver on Sunday that he would induce on Monday.


She, dutifully, went in at 5 a.m. Monday morning. At 1:18p. m., she had a 6lb 2oz baby girl. According to her husband, after the birth of the baby and before any contractions started to expel the placenta, the doctor (resident?) or are they interns?) wrapped his fingers around the cord, placed his elbow against her knee and PULLLLLLLLLED.. ( :

At 2 p.m., her husband called to let us know the mother and baby were fine. At 3 p.m., he called to tell us she was sent to emergency surgery. She had flooded the bed all the way to her socks. The nurse came in changed the sheets and cleaned her up. Nurse went out for two minutes. When nurse came back in, the bed was flooded again and mom was white.

2 hours of surgery later, she was okay with bleeding under control. She and baby finally got to come home today.

and HOW???? can a doctor STUPID enough to YANK on an umbilical cord be anywhere near a OB unit????????


OKAY, I'VE vented enough. I'm totally dumbfounded that this happened to this poor woman.

OMG! No, I've never seen a doc PULL out a placenta! I do get nervous occasionally when they tug on it a little, but I guess putting traction on it is the new thing or something.

I'm glad your friend is OK.

I changed service providers...went to Wal-Mart's service..not sure if i like it or not. but anyway........Each time I tried to log in as parker in arkie, it would log me in and redirect me to the log in page. So, uhmm..i'm addicted. I changed it so i could get my fix.

I don't work OB (never have) and even I know NOT to pull on an umbilical cord!!!

Doctor will be lucky if doesn't get sued....

seen it done before,seen one pull so hard that the cord pulled off the placenta then he went in and manually removed it. that was long ago now i speak up

I do remember one case but it was when I was doing agency in ICU years back so I never learnt the outcome. Patietn was an elderly primipera US showed grossly abnormal fetus so she had a termination. I was looking after her because when they let her serum sodium hit 120 before she fitted (!!!!) Teh doctor then did a manual removal of retained products. When I nursed her they had no idea how much brain damage she would suffer. The thing is to this day I cannot understand why he did an episiotomy.

OK, I am not a nurse, not even started my clinicals yet, don't have children yet and even I know that that is not right.

First of all, it sounds pretty damn painfull, second, if you pull on it to retrieve the placenta can't you cause the uterus to bleed out, which is what happened in this case?!?!

If I was that woman I would sue that Dr.'s a-- off. She could have ended up with a hysto in surg. if they could not have controlled the bleeding. Does she know that?

I'm steamed for you and her.
