Hi Everybody,
I could use a little career advice. I've been an ICU nurse for two years and I'm tired of it. Everyone tells me my personality is well suited to L&D because I get along well with others and I'm very patient and good at explaining things. I also want to start working part-time soon.

Is it realistic for me to plan to accept a part-time job in a L&D unit having had no prior L&D experience? I am willing to do the training on a full-time basis, but would then like to switch to part-time. Reasonable, or not?

It is not only realistic, but a good move, if you are desiring this chance. Some of the BEST OB nurses come from areas like ICU and Med-surg. GO FOR IT.

I was just worried that one needed 40 hours a week for at least a year in order to be competent in L&D (or at least, to be a desirable employee) and I wasn't sure that I had that time available to me right now. If you think I could be good and competent in that time I described then I believe you (I really respect your opinion). I'm going to start looking into L&D units in the area that are hiring.

First, congrats on your decision to move into a new area and good luck to you.

Second, not to highjack your thread here, but I have actually been wondering the exact same thing you were, just involving different areas...I have been in med-surg for almost 2 years and may be transferring to CCU or ICU very soon (I hope, I pray). I too was thinking that it will take at least a year of FT employment to become a proficient enough critical care nurse to go PT. I realize that moving to PT after orientation is likely not feasible, but what about after say 6 months? Any thoughts??

Hmm.
I think after a 3 month (give or take a few weeks) orientation and 3-4 months of full time work, switching to part time in an ICU would most likely be a reasonable choice. I think it could be done!
