Question BC Pills & Miscarriage

Can continuing to take them cause a miscarriage? I was on a 10 day course of antibiotics and after they were over I had a little bit of spotting and just felt odd. 5 days later I had pretty heavy bleeding with clots. Then a week later I had a normal period. I have been taking pills for almost 4 years because of pain and heavy bleeing that would put me in bed for a week. I didn't even think about it until I had the "early period" that I could have been pregnant. Anyone ever had an experience like this?

Re: BC Pills & Miscarriage

I am just a student so this is not a professional opinion, but if antibiotics make the pill ineffective against pregnancy I would think they would also allow for breakthrough bleeding? Continuing to take BCP when you are pregnant is not supposed to increase your risk of miscarriage or birth defects so that seems like a logical explanation Good luck...

Re: BC Pills & Miscarriage

I can't really answer your question.

But, MANY antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of OCs. When an OC user is taking antibiotics, her healthcare provider should advise her on the possible need for additional means of contraception.

It is possible to become pregnant on the pill, with or without the use of antibiotics. Whether or not a course of antibiotics would increase the risk of miscarriage, I don't know.

If you believe you may have been pregnant, it would be wise to consult your doc or midwife. I'm sorry for your situation.

Correct. Really you need to see your personal health care provider/doctor for advice. Terms of Service of this site prohibit seeking or giving medical advice. Please contact your doctor ASAP to allay your concerns. BEST WISHES.
