Online FNP programs???

I moved to a small town where I am obtaining my BSN and when I applied they also offered an FNP degree here. Now with the advent of the DNP, they have dropped the FNP program from my campus and are not stating whether they will offer the DNP here or not. It was a huge undertaking for my family to move here for me to continue my education and another move is really not the most ideal situation. I have been looking online at some of the programs that offer online FNP programs, Graceland University, Phoenix University, etc. Does anyone know whether these programs can prepare you adequately? My opinion is that as far as the course work, I feel totally confident doing that online, most of my BSN program is offered online. I don't really get much out of sitting in lecture so I think I'd be okay doing it online as long as there was someone available if I had questions. They find preceptors for your clinical hours and I may have to travel a little for that, but I'm okay with that too. If anyone has any first hand information about these programs I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

You may also want to look in to Florida State University. They offer an FNP program online and seem to be pretty good.

Good luck.

Ball State University also offers an FNP program online as well. I have a friend attending that program and she says it is wonderful. I think most schools offers course work on line and then practicum is offered locally. From my perspective - when you are attending an online program - you are getting the same education as a ground campus student. The only difference is that you do your school work around your schedule. I think it is a wonderful option.

I went to school at Ball State University for undergrad and plan on doing the online ANP from there as well. It is a good school.

I'm sure the list is not all inclusive. In fact, University South Alabama (USA), a good online FNP program, is not listed.

Thanks ladies. I am so excited to have this option. I really did not want to have to move! There seems to be some really great programs out there; it's going to be hard to decide on one.

Re: Online FNP programs???

Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing offers a distance FNP, as well as its more well known CNM. You go to Hyden KY a couple of times for a week, and do coursework online whereever you feel like it (I'm doing mine living on a California beach right now, because I can). You find your own preceptor in your community; they can also help you find one. If you already know someone you can precept with, where you live, you're halfway there already. I think FNS tuition is cheaper than the tuition at Phoenix and anywhere but instate tuition. Check out www.midwives.org

Hi, I am cmmg and I read your post on University of South Alabama and heard about it from a friend and I am considering doing their FNP program. Just want to know, did you attend there? How do you know they are a good online program? Just curious. Want to make sure I have professors available to contact when help is needed. lol

Hello, cmmg

No, I did not graduate from USA.

I serve as mentor for post-grad NPs many of whom graduated from USA. Excellent preparation for advanced practice. Sure, there will be certain aspects of any program that is not exactly perfect, but IMO, USA offers a good education.
