Hiya all,
I'm a FNP that just started a "new-new" position in a community/county hospital as a FNP on a substance abuse/detox unit managing their medical care. This position is completely new to the unit, they've normally called consults for all their medical patient needs. BUT my question is: I was just given an empty office without any supplies. What supplies are necessary for daily practice? Otoscope, BP cuff, etc. Keep in mind all that's in the office is a examining table and a writing desk.

Don't they have a fully stocked exam room nearby or will you be setting up your office for that purpose?

There isn't any office nearby, the office that they've given me, will be mine. I need to know what are definite must haves' within this office.

Is this inpatient or outpatient:
Dynamap is nice to have
At the minimum you need oto/opthalmascope, BP cuff (in proper sizes), and thermometer. Thats what we have in our rooms but we have all the worlds supplies just around the corner. 12 lead in that environment is probably a necessity. Things like reflex hammer, tongue depressors etc are nice to have but not absolutely necessary. It goes without saying that you should have PPE (gloves mask etc).

It all depends on what type of exam you need to be able to do. It also depends on the volume of business. Do you have to do pelvics for example? In school we could put everything that we needed for a physical exam in a small bag. The wall mounted units nicer but not absolutely necessary. The dynamapp is nice but again more efficient not absolutely necessary.
