I am new to this forum and haven't seen this discussed but will be the first to say I haven't spent a lot of time exploring other threads.
I had planned to go to medical school many years ago but a number of personal factors intervened and I didn't. I was able to get into the health care field via nursing years later. Had the opportunity been there I would have happily gone to medical school. It wasn't so I was happy to be able to go to NP school instead. Life is a compromise and you take the best of what you can make of the situation.
I am not in any way speaking to the nursing profession as being "less" than the medical; but more to my own personal make-up. I am happy that I was able to do all the things in my life that I did AND come to a point where I am able to provide quality health care.
