Hi,

I am in a BSN program and have not yet decided what I would like to specialize in. I do know that I want to become an NP. Is it possible, for example, to be an ICU nurse and then become an NP with a different specialty? Or would a nurse need to specialize in the specialty they want to get the NP in?

Yes, it is quite possible to be NP without first woking in an area you think you would want to specialize.

Take for example the FNP (family practice). You would not be able to work in a unit with that name/specialty.

I did work in my specialty and became OB-GYN NP, but, then secured the FNP without working first outside obstetrics/gynecology.

Many individuals you will see on these boards who are in an NP program and have no idea where they would like to specialize. They are constantly questioning their decisions. And, working in a specialty unit/s did not help to prepare them for that decision in the NP program.

On the other hand, you will find many who work in pedi units and know without a doubt they want to be an PNP. Or, neonatal units/nursery and desire NNP.

Your track in the NP program is most important, however. What you would like to do the remainder of your career, unless you want to do what I had to do, and secure another certification.
