The short answer is that you must complete a master of science in nursing degree program with a concentration in a nurse practitioner specialty (such as family, adult, acute care or pediatrics).
Do you already have an ADN or BSN? If so, you can likely go directly into a master's or RN-MSN program. If not, and if you already have a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing, you could look into one of the many "direct-entry" programs that are springing up around the country. Otherwise, you will first have to earn a BSN.
