Yep, ACNP - December 2003 graduate. Very affordable program and really close to many Metro Detroit hospital systems were students typically rotate to. Many alumni in the Detroit area who actually choose to stay and practice in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs. Great affiliation with well-known area hospitals.

Faculty can be hit or miss but like most grad programs, it's all about the effort you are willing to put out. Clinicals can be arranged through the ACNP program director (she has a list of affiliated preceptors) but students are free to choose their own subject to the director's approval as sites have to have a written contract with the university.

All in all, I liked the program but have no way of comparing it with another as I did not have experience attending the other programs. Other option in Michigan is the University of Michigan Ann Arbor - this school is well known nationally with an excellent reputation as far as nursing goes (although Wayne State is up there too!) but very expensive tuition even for in-state students.

Not that it matters to me and the OP (as the OP's decision must have been made up by now), but can you care to comment why you thought Wayne State is the worst (or worse as you stated) school ever? Is it based on personal experience attending the College of Nursing there?

That's too bad you had a bad experience and felt not supported as a student unless you have money. While Wayne State is definitely not perfect, I had the opposite experience as an in-state student. I thought the tuition was affordable and was actually able to pay it initially with my nurse's salary in addition to having a home mortgage I shared with my significant other. That's what actually made me decide to register there instead of my other option at the time which was the University of Michigan. I even got a nice break when I received an Advanced Nursing Education Traineeship Award that paid for 8 credits for three semesters while in the MSN program. The school have drastically increased their tuition since I graduated in 2003. But that's because the State of Michigan have also drastically decreased funding to it's network of state universities and many have also raised their tuition over the years. What program were you trying to get into?

I AM in the PhD program at this time, and since I'm having difficulties with passing the nonsense exam called NCLEX, then my opportunities are NONE. and even if I had that NCLEX I have to pay 6 thousand dollars to be able to work in this country, they are in shortage for nurses and they make it hard on them. they do a lot of research and they so many big grants, and they do not offer any graduate research assistant positions for students just like any other school, all people that I know in other schools at Wayne have either a graduate teaching assistant or graduate research assistant position, and actually they come with these positions waiting for them so they do not have to fight for them just like I'm doing and it's useless. I failed NCLEX twice and I'm not thinking of taking it the third time because I feel like I'm wasting my money (that I dont get easily) for nothing. This is why this school is not of a good experience for me. all they keep doing are promises and promises that keeps me dreaming. I've been dreaming to work as an RN in the US, I was a pediatric oncology nurse for 4 years in my country, and i miss working in a hospital as a nurse, this research life is just killing me.

You may have gotten to a point where your knowledge base is way above a nurse armed with just the basic nurse training which the NCLEX-RN is intended for. You may have to think along the lines of an entry-level RN or take a refresher course prior to retaking the NCLEX-RN. I would not in any way question your academic skills but unfortunately the license is what authorizes a nurse to function in the clinical setting. I can also understand your frustration about being able to practice as a foreign nurse. More than ever, doors have closed to foreign nurse recruitment and the same probably applies to those enrolled in graduate nursing programs. Perhaps you can rethink the direction you want for your career. Since you said, other colleges and schools at Wayne State allows for doctoral students to become research assistants, would you consider other multidisciplinary fields of study offered there such as Public Health, Gerontology, Psychology?

I do not have the time and resources to keep switching, so i will just wait and see, what will this supportive school take me. Thanks for the advise anyway.
