Question Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hi, my name is Doug. I am studying the PSBRN Prep booklet from Morrison Media LLC so that I can pass the entrance exam for SON. Has anyone heard of this book? I've seen some of you mention "Nursing and Allied Health Entrance Examination". I am shooting to take the test in May so that I can start on Sep. 2nd. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Doug........the Allied Health Book is an excellent study aid. If you look on the school's website, they list 4 different books to study for this test. The science section is by far the hardest in my opinion. With that being said, I scored in the 94th % on the science and in the 99th % in the other 3 categories and the book I used was the Marion Gooding Allied Health book. Good luck!

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hi! My name is Cindy and I plan on taking the PSBRN exam for SHadyside SON in February for admission to the fall program starting in Sept. I have been out of school for awhile and am very nervous about this test.

Can you give me any in sight? I have bought the Nursing School and allied health exam book along with the Barron's HOw to... I have also gone to a few websites and done their practice tests. Is there anything else I could do to prepare?

What makes the science portion so hard? Many threads have commented on that. Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Greetings,

I found the science part difficult because the study guide I had, did not cover the same material that was on the test.

What study guide did you use? I just want to make sure I am studying the appropriate things.

I am very nervous about this exam. I'm not even sure why i am so nervous.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

The science is hard, but not impossible. If you study the books that they recommend, you should not have a problem. It deals with alot of anatomy and physiology, chemistry and a bit of microbiology from what I can remember. I took it after not having a science class since high school, and I haven't been in high school for quite awhile. My college degree didn't require any science courses, so I didn't know much. The Marion Gooding book is the best in my opinion..........if you can learn that material, you should do fine.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Thanks for your help mommyjskns. I feel a little better in regards to the science and knowing that I am using the correct study material.

I too have been out of high school a very long time, been out of trade school a very long time too! ( however, i don't want to admit it. LOL) But my trade school was to become a cardiac tech/medical assistant, so i "should" be ok with the science. (hopefully, fingers crossed)

My main concern is the math. Is that very hard? I had heard that it was all word problems is that true, do you remember?

Sorry to be a pain, but I really want to do this and right now my 2 kids are watching and learning from me. I don't want to disappoint them either.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hi! The math was not all word problems.....there are a few, but I would advise you to brush up on fractions and decimals. There were several of those. Honestly, my scores were really high......99th % in everything except science and a 94th % in that......and I haven't had any classes since college........I totally understand about your kids watching you. I have 5 kids and now that I am in my second semester of the program, I strive for A's.......I expect them from my kids, so I don't think that they should expect any less from me. Good luck on the exam... I am sure that you will do fine. It seems like you want this very much.....that is exactly how I felt last year at this time.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hello! Thank you so much for the info and help, mommyjskns. I feel a little better now.

It's nice to know that other people have done what I am about to and are doing well at it.

You are right, I really do want this. I've been trying to do this for years, but could not due to unforseen events.

I'll keep you posted on what happens. Once again thanks!!
