Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Hi everyone! I am hoping to get accepted for the Spring 2008 semester. I just got my test scores today and I am soo excited. I was worried when I took the test but I got the 99th percentile in vocab, math, and reading and the 98th percentile in science!!! I will def be celebrating to day and can't wait to find out if I am accepted. Does anyone know when that will be?

I don't remember how long it took them to send me my letter. When you can't stand it anymore you can call them and ask them when you might hear from them. The current semester ends on 12/14 and the next starts on 1/2. I'm not sure how many people are around between semesters.

Congratulations on the great scores.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

The spring semester starts February 25, so I think that you will hear relatively soon, as there are things you need to do before you start. I don't think that you have anything to worry about, but I know how you feel as I went through it last spring, waiting to hear if I was accepted for Fall. My semester ends next week, then we start again on January 2. The spring class has time..........like I said, the start date for it is Feb. 25. This should give you ample time to get all of your paperwork and shots taken care of. Good luck!!!!!

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

I really like the school. I just moved on to Nurs203, my first was 202 and I finish the 200's with 201.
My advice so far :
Nurs 100 and 101: these will be 16 wk classes but will go fast. Each wk go home and rewrite your notes and study a little everyday.
Nurs 102 (another 16 wks) will be the first clinical experience. Practice on everyone at home on head-to-assessment. It will help you to become more prepared when you go to clinical and really practice with vitals. Also, this is the course where you will be lectured by every Nursing 102 instructor. There are about seven. Everyone have different styles some lecture really fast and some lecturers are down right boring but they all come with lots of content so notetaking and study skills need to really be good.
Pharm ,(Nurs 103) will be another class taught during the 16 wks above) go home rewrite your notes, use notecards and take them with you whereever you go and study them. The test have a lot of content in them. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE 5 RIGHTS WHEN GIVING MEDS!!!!!!
Nursing 202 (from here on out, 8 wk classes that fly by): these questions are definitely all about critical thinking. Questions like " Your pt presents to the hospital with symptoms of X, Y and Z. What would you do first? Meanwhile, in lecture the information comes at you like, this is diabetes and this is what the symptoms are, this is abnormal and this is how you treat it." So basically, no memorizing, study to retain the info. Know what normal is, and what abnormal is and how to correct it or get it under control.

Best of luck!

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Were any of you waitlisted? That is my biggest fear at this point.

I'm studying to take the test in April, and hoping to get in for the fall term (september 2nd). i think i have plenty of time to get everything ready, i just don't want to be wait listed for a year or two.

I don't think they waitlist. I think if you do well on your test, you will get in.

Re: Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

No, I didn't have to wait. I took some prerequisites before taking the entrance exam and it really helped me to pass, especially the Science part. After I passed the exam, basically I was accepted.
