peripheral line insertion

Hi Guys,
When inserting a peripheral line what do you use to cleanse the skin with? We currently use sterets which contain 70% isopropyl alcohol. That aint gud!!!!!!!!Do you use different solutions dependant on gestational age? Cheers

We use Betadine and used to wipe it off with alcohol, but we changed to Betadine and sterile saline wipes.

Re: peripheral line insertion

For regular peripheral IVs we use 70% alcohol wipes, no wiping it off.

For PICCs, we use chlorhex, and again, don't wipe it off.

Wasn't sure which you meant!

Ditto for us. Our PICC kits come with the chlorohexadine preps in them.

Re: peripheral line insertion

Does depend on the age of the baby...for ELBW babies we do not use any alcohol- use betadine for any invasive procedures followed by sterile water. but for term babies we just use alcohol for PIV's and chlorhexidine/betadine for PICC's/midlines.
