Mock Codes

Does anyone out there have mock codes in their unit? We have yearly mock codes in a classroom and walk through the motions, but I am trying to get "live" mock codes started in the unit with the doctor/NNP being involved. Soon on any given night, half of our night staff is going to be brand new Neonatal nurses with little to no experience, so I am thinking it would be a good idea to get them used to situations like that. If anyone does this, give me ideas as to how it is done. Thanks.

Re: Mock Codes

We had yearly competencies where we ran through NRP mock codes, as well as IVs, TPN, blood administration, labs, chest tube/exchange transfusion/needle aspiration procedure checkoffs. It was very helpful, since you don't do some of those things all the time.

Re: Mock Codes

Hi Y'all

Merry Christmas!

We have to do a mock code in the year opposite our NRP renewal. We review the code cart and then take a trip down to an empty L&D room to do the actual "code" part of it. The NNPs who do the class give you a scenario and then off you go, they have you running the code. Sort of like a what would you do if you got there and the NNP hadn't arrived yet and the baby was out sort of thing, or you are responsible for triplet c becuase there are only 2 NNPs there that day. It really makes you think because you can't rely on the NNP to step in to help it's all on you. An excellent experience in my opinion

Re: Mock Codes

Dear SCAMMRNC,
In our NICU we have a mock code two times a month. The neonatolgist, resdidents, rt, and NICU nurses attend. Our theme is in the delivery room with the delivery room bag.
We actually draw up the meds and insert UAC catheters perform NRP and treat this like a real code with the neo running it. It is always more nerve racking to do a code in the delivery room as opposed to doing a code on the unit. Much more stressfull in the delovery room. Hence the mock codes.
