NNP Scheduling

I am interested in becoming an NNP....eventually. What are the various schedules the NNPs in your particular hospital have? Also, do you know of any NNP's who work one 24 hour shift a week, or another "alternate" schedule?

Seems like a funny question, I know. The NP forum isn't very good about replying to threads from non-NPs who want info.

Thanks!!

Hmmm, let's see...
The NNPs on my unit (two) work M-F like 8-4 ish? I never really paid attention to their hours.
But they just recently started working weekend rotations 12 on 12 off. I think the do that once a month. HTH.

I know an NNP that works several 24 hour shifts a month. I hope this helps.

I believe it depends on the hospital policy. Our NNP's no longer work 24 hours, they work 12-16.

Thanks for the replies...its what I'm looking for. I'm just curious if an NNP can work a PRN or part-time schedule. I am thinking for when kids arrive, I don't want to have to work full time or not at all--I was hoping there was an inbetween.

I don't think you could do that in a hospital setting. Maybe an outpatient clinic. Maybe.

In my level III unit, our NNPs work 8-12 hour day shifts, 7 days a week. They used to work night shift too, but we are short on NNPs now so the fellows cover their team's babies at night. They are able to work either part or full time, anywhere from one 8 hour shift every two weeks up to a regular 40 hours per week. However, it's recommended for the first year or two that they work at least 20 hours per week (preferably full time) - otherwise it's very hard to get the experience needed to get a handle on this very serious position. (That's actually our unit stance on nursing as well.)
