Maybe it's me, but seeing babies sucking on their ET tube makes me a little sad. Like they should be sucking on a pacifier or something....I don't know. But your other 2, definitely !

I actually like seeing that because I think it indicates that the baby is able to self-soothe and comfort themselves. That's a good thing IMO. And it's so uniquely NICU!

Oh, I agree that it's good that they are able to self-soothe. It just makes me a little sad. I don't know what about it exactly, maybe just that it should be a pacifier instead of an ETT.

I totally agree, Kate. Maybe it's because we so rarely orally intubate, but it kinda bums me out too.

Plus, it's not always easy to get that pacifier in there with the ET tube.

Re: Funny/happy NICU moments needed

We had a baby in the unit about a year or so ago, I think he was 26 weeks. He was up for a visit the other day (looking fantastic, giving everyone this drooly grin), and his mom has gone back to school to be a nurse. She was telling us that she wants to work with us someday. Not only did we save her baby's life, but we inspired her to become a NICU nurse. Isn't that neat?

Exactly--that is so true! and half the time if they have an ET tube they are sedated so they really cant hold the pasi in there very well! poor kiddos...

preemieRNkate--i also love that story about the mom wanting to be a NICU nurse...i have seen a few moms and even siblings that have had the same effect!

I totally agree with you two. My sister and I were both born about 4 weeks early. I was 5 lbs and my sister about 4. That was were she was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot. But anyways sorry bout the rant. For some odd reason I have always wanted to be a nicu nurse. What 8th grader stands up during class and says that they want to be a NICU NURSE and have the teacher look at you funny. I feel as tho I have a connection becuase of my sister.

SORRY ABOUT HIJACKING THE THREAD. I RESPECT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU NICU NURSE. I AM JEALOUS AND ENVIOUS IN A GOOD WAY. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO ALL OF YOU ARE HEROS TO ME.
