Hello. I have a couple of questions. Here is the first one. Can someone please give me the basics on CMV? What are the problems for mom and baby? I looked it up, but am still not clear about it.n

CMV is a virus in the herpes family. Most of us have been exposed when we were young. It causes mild cold-like symptoms. If mom gets a primary infection though while she's pregnant, it can cause congenital anomalies as part of the TORCH family of defects.

Our neonatologists order CMV tests on babies who have smaller than normal head circumferences as well as sometimes on SGA babies.

One of the characteristic signs of congenital CMV infections is a "blueberry muffin rash".... bluish-purple raised lesions scattered across the infant's body.. Usually treated with acyclovir, or ganciclovir.
