Question When do things pick up?

I am only into the program about a month and so far everything is going well...I am averaging about a 97% on of my tests. My question is.....when do we get into more LPN stuff than CNA stuff? I used to be a CNA and to be honest, I am finding it hard to stay awake during all of the bedmaking, bathing and body mechanics stuff. I know they need to break it down for people who have no experience, so I just want to know when we start to do things I don't already know how to do.

Re: When do things pick up?

In my program, if you weren't already a CNA you had to take an extra class to learn all those skills. The CNAs tested out of that class & had a relatively easy 1st term. Those of us who took the class had a heavy class load plus 6 weeks of clinicals (only 6 hours a week, I believe). By the end, we supposedly were caught up with the CNAs.

Re: When do things pick up?

Second semester is usually when things get interesting and the students start to drop out because they suddenly realize that nursing isn't what they thought it would be.

Re: When do things pick up?

I totally know what you mean. I'm in my first "term", and I'm honestly not finding it that hard at all. I'm pulling As and have all "Satisfactory"s on clinical days and I haven't worked as an aide in many years (been doing the SAHM thing ). BUT, our instructors keep repeating like a broken record that they're "giving us a break" and "holding our hands" through this intro stuff and that starting second term at the beginning of June, we're going to be let loose. So, I guess I'll be singing a different tune on the ease of things here in a couple weeks. We'll see!

Re: When do things pick up?

Hi. I guess it will depend on how your program is set up. I think that once you hit anything to do with anatomy, nutrition, pharacology,med-surg, you will be awake!!! I did notice that having been an STNA for years that it made the first classes so-so, but it also gave me a leg up. When you do get there, your class size will drop! We started wity 28 and now have 10 and we only have until end of Aug. Remeber though, you may have your clinicals at mostly nursing homes and you will be doing "aide" work again. To quote a girl in my class,"I am tired of doing pro-bono work!" Best wishes it will get more interesting! Keep us up to date!!

I was wondering when the dropping out would happen too- becuase there are some that aren't doing well already.

Thanks for the replies!
