I think this site is great. But I am spending way to much time here and wondering if we should start an allnurse.com Anonymous group

Im Addicted!!

Hi all you wonderful people out there! I was truely blessed when I "stumbled" across "allnurses". I have only been a member for maybe 2 months now and I spend at least an hour a day on here! The posts and articles have been heartfelt, educational, and sometimes humourous!
I am a second year nursing student and I am sure I will be here still reading in my 20th year of nursing! I just adore this site and everything it offers, love being able to express own opinions and views in a safe manner with people who share and understand so much of what a student nurse and a nurse go through on a daily basis. I am blessed to be a part of such a fabulous bunch of beautiful people! Thank you so much!!!! Special thanks to Brian.

A valuable resource, as well as a friend source!

I stumbled across Allnurses.com in January of 2002. Since then, it has proven itself over and over again to be an extremely valuable resource. There is always someone online, and even in the middle of the night it's super easy to get questions answered. The expertise and professionalism of many of the nurses on here is superb.

This is also a place for venting, opinion expressing, and also just a bit of all-around fun when the topic of nursing gets a bit too heavy to handle. I've met some wonderful people through this site, and have received (and given, I hope) much support and understanding as I walk the often difficult path of nursing.

Allnurses.com is a very frequent stop for me during my daily online travels. It's one of the few nursing sites I come to, and it's by FAR the most comprehensive in that it truly covers every aspect of nursing. I'm very appreciative to Brian for starting this site, and to the others who assist him in the mega-effort it must be to keep it running. You all are the best, and I thank you.

allnurses is a blessing!

allnurses has been my “saving grace” more than once in the past few years! When I was working at the hospital, which was honestly the “best” job I’ve ever had, other nurses provided a lot of support and humor and advice when things got rough. It was always a blessing to be able to come here and talk with other people who knew where I was coming from and had also been there and done that. When I was “fired” (technically ASKED to resign) from there, I was crushed…beyond what I can even describe…even now, over two years later, I am getting teary as I type. Then, a lot of people from allnurses helped to pick myself up and go on with my world…and when my sister died, five days after I was “fired” the support was just overwhelming. It is amazing that a bunch of people who I have never met stood by me and reminded me that life goes on and that sitting and wallowing in my self pity wasn’t getting me anywhere. When traumaRUs gave me a “gift premium membership” to allnurses, I probably cried for three days!

So…two jobs later (and one job offer that was rescinded!), allnurses is still an important part of my day. I don’t post as much as a lot of members do, but I check in quite a bit. It is very therapeutic to read that so many others are going through what I am going through or to laugh at the things that keep us from going home in tears at the end of our shift. I still miss the hospital a lot and hope to get to work in one again. For now, I like what I do, even though my supervisor is a bit back stabbing and inconsistent! I still have horrible fears that every time I mess up, that I am going to end up getting “fired” again…I don’t know if that feeling will ever go away. I am really starting to love long term care again…it just feels so good when residents make a point of introducing me to their families or tell the doctor how much I did for them, when all I did was hold their hand while the hospice nurse explained their philosophy to them.

I think that allnurses makes a difference in the lives of the regulars…it is a great place to vent, get advise, give advice, learn from our colleagues mistakes, and share stories…the good ones and the bad. I really appreciate Brian and all of the moderators for what they do…there have been days that have been so much easier because of what you do!

I almost forgot...one of my favorite online friends posts here! Tazzi...I love you bunches...haven't seen you in ages!

I love allnurses.com!

I have been a member for several years and can always find an answer to my questions on this site. Not only does it offer resources and information, but is also a great source of inspiration and encouragement. The people that are a part of this site are insightful and full of knowledge and they do not mind sharing that knowledge with others. Whenever I am at a loss, I know that I can come here and find what I need to give my patients the best care possible.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site!

allnuses.com Saved My Life!

Well, that title might be just a tad bit exaggerated. I do that, sometimes.

But I discovered allnurses as a first year student with severe anxiety on a good day and panic on an intermittent, but frequent basis. I feel blessed to have found it when I did, for the insights from more experienced nurses and the commiseration from others in my position.

I tell my friends that I developed my "philosophy of nursing" mostly on allnurses, and while I often say it in a pompous and pretentious tone of voice, the fact is, it's true.

A good while before I began to develop the skills to actually be a nurse, I was forming a clearer picture of what being a nurse meant to me. That image might not have been able to write my careplans or memorize the meds I would be passing, but I do believe it's an important part of learning to "think like a nurse."

Nursing is a job, but it's also a way of life, and when it gets in your blood, you don't see anything quite the way you did before you became a nurse. (Mind you, I'm not saying that's always a good thing...)

Allnurses.com is entertaining, useful, fun, and educational. There are people here whom I think of as friends and mentors, and maybe a couple who sometimes get on my nerves--perfect preparation for nursing in the real world--wouldn't you say?

Love AN - to the disgust of DH

AN was here when I was going through a particularly hard time at work as an Enrolled Nurse. OK, so I am from Down Under, but people were here, people who understood, people who cared. Nursing is international and universal.

You have the opportunity to reciprocate, to share knowledge, to learn. Many of the specialty sites have great resources which I used for part of my Registered Nurse training. And now I can be there to help others with their studies.

I really love the Premium access, as I have begun to develop relationships with people. A whole range of people, who still share nursing as a common experience.

Love you AN!

Allnurses.com is the #1 best website

To my good fortune I happened upon allnurses.com one night while searching for some information about an IV medication. What I found was not only all the information I needed about reconstituting that medication but also a vast treasure trove of information on anything pertaining to nurses and nursing. If by chance you cannot find something, you can ask, and you will get an answer.

I have good friends here on allnurses who really care about me the person as well as me the nurse. I can come here when I'm happy and or when I'm sad. I have a safe place to vent when I need to. I have a safe place to join a intelligent discussion when I feel the need. I have a safe place to ask for an opinion on any topic imaginable without fear of being chastised for my own opnion. The moderators look out for everyone and make sure that everything written is done so respectfully.

There are many more perks being a Premium or Platinum Member. The Break Room is "always" entertaining. The Good Morning thread keeps us abreast of what's going on in each others lives. There are true friendships to be found in the Break Room. In addition to the GM thread there are many more threads in the Break Room that can brighten up you day Jokes, heartwarming stories, games, polls, photo's to share, discuss books you're reading, what you're cooking including the recipes, and the list goes on.

Allnurses.com is here for me 24/7 365 days a year. I never have to be lonely or bored. I can come here to laugh, cry, vent, enjoy, learn, search, be creative (writting an article), or voice an opinion. I find that allnurses is wonderful therapy. You have a signature line you can change whenever your heart desires and a personalized Avatar that you can change whenever you want to change your look or mood. Where on earth can you get therapy 24/7 every day of the year for 8 cents per day? Hey and no forms to fill out! No preauthorization! Now if you're like me and prefer not to see all the ads then you can spend 16 cents per day and go Premium.

Allnurses is great!!

I really enjoy this site!! I've asked and answered many questions and heard from nurses all over the country and even the world. Nurses feel free to open up and share their embarassing, depressing and uplifting stories from all walks of nursing. It's very broadening to hear from others who hold different points of view, and very comfortiing when others feel the same as I do. And you can hear about all kinds of news stories, clinical tips, and situations that involve nurses. I check this site out right before I head for bed for the night, because it's like being surrounded by family. Even when there's a little bickering, we are there for each other.

Yes Grace, there really is a Santa Claus ......

............. Because there is allnurses!

Several years ago I happened across a fledgling nursing website.
'Ah, damn yankee stuff!'; murmured me to myself.
However, being the nosey coot that I am, I decided to check "this mob" out. Afterall, us Aussies and the yanks are allies and fought in wars together. They graciously shared their cholesterol raising, fat building, heart damaging fast food giants with us. So really, we're mates, right?

Initially I wondered if there would be a "place" for me here, since I was now retired from nursing AND from a far away land across the sea who spoke a tad differently! Reason for that is those yankees speak with an accent y'know!
Well, it didn't take long to realise, yes, there certainly is a "place" here for me.
There's a "place" here on allnurses for EVERYONE!

And so began the opening of new horizions, new friendships, the getting of wisdom, the attainment of new skills learnt by reading the amazing gracious and unselfish sharing by others here.

Not only professional knowledge shared and paid forward by those willing to contribute what they know. But also the incredible experiences, the pain of loss, the agony of grief, the happiness, joy and sheer beauty of the human condition! It's ALL here!

No one person who ever visits or becomes a part of our huge extended family here on allnurses, can ever leave without having being educated, informed, enlightened, inspired, challenged, touched and changed in some way.

For those of us in the older, (erhem let's call it expereinced shall we?!) age group, there exists the opportunity to pass along not only our nursing knowledge and experiences, but also our vast and varied life experiences, to the younger generation who are willing to listen and learn.

Equally, us older people can learn from the younger folks and have ourselves opened up to new and exciting things which might otherwise pass us by.

We all live in a diffrerent world today from the one I grew up in.
There were no computers, no mobile phones, CRIKEY! here in Oz, we didn't even have an indoor toilet!

Yes, the world is a very diffferent place today.
With the events in recent times in our world, there is even more need and reason for people to come together. To share. To reach out. To unite.

Thanks to the insight, the foresight, the unselfishness and generosity of spirit of one fine young man, Mr Brian Short RN, the world of nursing, and the world at large, has this wonderful website which affords all of us what the Australian aboriginal's call; "Kariong" a "Meeting place" .

It's in this meeting place that I personally have found wonderful new mates, forged friendships which I believe will endure, and also continue to grow and learn because of all the shared information found here.

I thank Brian and all the administrators, moderators, and all who contribute to help make allnurses what it is today: a true blue "Kariong!"

Kudos to Allnurses!!!!

Allnurses.com was here when I was trying to decide what to do. From being a LPN to encouraging me to get my RN, and through NCLEX-RN, and now as DON for a LTC. Allnurses has been here for me through it all.
Anytime I have a question or need to talk something out, I know that I can get on Allnurses and someone will be online to help me come up with a solution, being with nursing or even with social/home life. I love being a Premium Member of Allnurses.com! I recommend it to anyone that will listen, even those who are just considering nursing as a career.

Allnurses

I found Allnurses when I was a mid-life nursing student.

I honestly say that I've met some of the most incredible, wonderful people here. I've gotten help not just as a nurse and a student, but when my 18-year-old son died I received a lot of support that I needed. It was in the wee hours of the morning when we were told-too early to tell others, so I came here. And of course people were there immediately to give their love and shoulders to cry on.

Over the years I've gotten to know some of the folks here and I really feel like they are family.

Allnurses was here when I graduated, passed my NCLEX and got my first job. Allnurses was here through some of the best and worst times of my life.

Thank you Brian, and all you wonderful nurses and nurses-to-be.

I hope I can give even a small fraction of what I've gotten from all of you.

I Was Looking For Some Humor

Loving to laugh, I was surfing the web looking for some nursing jokes, when a link to Allnurses popped up. Wanting to satisfy my curiosity, I decided to click on the link. What I found was awesome. I signed up right away, and have been a member of Allnurses since that very first day of June 7, 2002.

I have made many friends since then, and feel like Allnurses is my second family. I remember one of the first threads I started. It was about my desk calendar. It was titled "Love My Calendar." The calendar was a nursing cartoon humor one. One particular one stands out and was about a man in a bar who sat himself down next to an attractive nurse sitting on the stool next to him. He struck up a conversation with her, and said, "I'd like to have you as my nurse when I become a patient." The nurse said, "That would be rather difficult since I'm a Labor and Delivery nurse."

I have seen a lot of growth on this website since then, and the membership with all its amenities is an wonderful extra. We had a lot of threads back then, but it's even much better now with a growth in membership of now into the hundreds of thousands.

Some of my best friends...

I found allnurses.com by accident one day several years ago while researching nursing schools. Somehow, though I found what I needed, I returned to the site time and time again. OK, it's safer (and more honest!) to say that I never left. I've met some of the most amazing people here who have guided me, advised me, admonished me and suported me through my journey into nursing. Some of these people have truly become my closest friends. I've watched this site grow into the world's largest and best nursing information website. I'm proud of what Brian and the administrators have done and how they continue to provide for their members, and I'm honored and humbled to be a part of the staff today. And the members who continue to ask questions, share experiences, extend welcoming hands, cry, laugh, vent... all of them make this site what it is.

Thanks to all of you!

AN improves my nursing skills

I was a nurse's aide in the 1970's and worked evening shift in LTC.

We'd finish getting patients bathed and put to bed, and we'd have a smoke at the nurse's station and listen to the experienced nurses talk. They'd discuss the patients, the politics, the horror stories, the funny stories, nursing school and things like whether or not nurses should have to wear caps.

One nurse in particular, Mrs. Griffiths, would take us around to different patients and teach us how to do procedures or let us watch. She was trained in England and she would teach us about the different therapies that the English used. Every time we worked together, she'd share her knowledge with me and I sopped up every word like a sponge.

Then I married a man who wanted me to quit my job. I stayed home for almost 16 years. In the healthcare world, reorganization and downsizing changed nursing forever.

When I came back to healthcare, I was stunned at the changes. It wasn't possible to learn from the nurses with decades of experience; they were gone. There was no time to sit around the nurse's station to learn from the experiences of others; the work was never finished. The staff were stressed and unhelpful. Nurses had no time to teach. It was frustrating and upsetting to see therapeutic patient care practices slashed from clinicians' repertoires. There was no time for that. There was no time to teach, no time to learn. Work was a neverending series of heavy physical tasks for the CNA, and an increasingly demanding workload for the nurses.

Having seen these changes up close, I can honestly say that Allnurses is the equivalent of being able to relax at the nurse's station with the experienced nurses. Here, we can share experiences and knowledge freely. We can learn from each other and teach the new students. We can discuss political issues and vent about having to wear whites.

In sum, Allnurses performs a vital function by creating a global virtual collegiality that is necessary for our growth as nurses and as a profession.

I doubt that I would be as good a nurse as I am today without Allnurses.

Thank you, Brian.

Allnurses ROCKS ;)

Ok maybe a 49 y.o. woman shouldn't use the expression, that something "ROCKS" - but what else can ya say? Great? Useful? Invaluable?

I've been a member for some time. My personal experience with Allnurses has always been positive. When I first joined, I was in a nearly impossible work situation. I'd chosen a field that was QUITE over my head, understaffed, disorganized - not fun, in other words. I found that, by reading posts by nurses in a similar environment, it helped me to do my job better and to cope with the stress of the situation.

Later, I found myself facing personal issues regarding my mental health. I found support, strength, acceptance, help, and hope for depression, anxiety, and other issues. Not medical advice, because the site is not here for that, but just real understanding and an ability to connect with others who were going or had gone thru the same thing. There is now a new "Nurses with Disabilities" forum, so finding that help and common ground is even easier! And there are nurses with physical disabilities who find support there as well.

Since joining, I have been able to keep my finger on the pulse of nursing - staying up to date with my skills, new research, new ways of providing care, new nursing theory. That dumb question you would NEVER dare to verbalize while on duty with Helga Hacksaw, RN? Ask it here! No one will know, and everyone else will benefit from your asking! This is also the place to read about current events and political changes as they relate to nursing.

I have come to know the "best of the bunch": great nurses who care about their patients who are also great people and friends. I enjoy meeting brand new nurses who are where I have been. I also dearly love meeting, ahem, more "mature" nurses, who are where I hope to be. It's just a nice place to visit.

I've found wonderful entertainment by being a premium member and participating in the daily "Good Morning" thread - following my friends' lives, updating them on mine, laughing together, crying together, parenting together, being single together - you name it. There is also a Military Family Member's thread available to premium and platinum members that I so love and appreciate, since my son is now in the military.

You also won't find yourself out in the "dead zone" of chatrooms and discussion groups. The administrator is a "plain old nurse" just like the rest of us, with an incredible team of moderators and staff members. Technical problems with the site? Just send a message to a staff member or mod. Or, I've seen it happen where someone will just throw out a question - and usually in a very short amount of time, someone will answer, provide guidance, or just plain commiserate.

So - would I recommend Allnurses? Where else can you find everything nursing - and then some - and if you still need more, Allnurses will help you FIND more! It's pretty cool

So yep - Allnurses ROCKS

A Home Online

it is a blessing to have a home site to come home to, where there are people who know what your problems are because they have walked in your shoes...who can advise you when to stand up and be heard at work and when it would be wiser to step back for a minute

there is always someone with a new point of view or a different slant to an old problem you can find people with a specific knowledge that you need

you can form friendships across the nation and around the world as you share the ups and downs of life, planting understanding because in the end we are so much the same as everyone else

Using allnurses.com As A Resource

I'll admit it; I'm addicted. I'm addicted to allnurses.com. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and Mississippi, I found myself questioning my job helping to make even more money for a company that did not reap nor did it sow. I ached to help with more than gutting relatives homes and wiping away tears of 80+ year old aunts who lost their whole lives no matter how noble others think that was. I began looking at nursing schools and found the one from which I will graduate as a RN in May. I found that school through allnurses.com.

As I began posting to this site I found a student from the previous year, (on allnurses.com) who gave me her books and her notes with the stipulation that I share, and Tracy, I have shared. Every time I have had a problem with understanding a theory or a skill, I have searched for answers in this site and inevitably find the answer because, of course, the question I have has been asked before.

When we start a new class, whether it be Med-Surg, or Mental Health, I come here and look for the resources available because nurses share; of course they do. I find web site links in threads for Dosage Math, and IV theory, and 1001 uses for gauze pads. I share this information with the class which has helped this older lady be accepted in a class of twenty somethings. I read articles and cry; I read articles and laugh. Most of all I have a huge network of other people who understand me.

I have been edited and I have been thanked. I have my favorite threads and follow post from certain people with anticipation and always I learn. I will be the best nurse I can and as I practice I will continue to post in the hopes that someday I will make someone else cry, or laugh, or learn.

Thank you for this website (allnurses.com).

I recommend allnurses.com to my students!

I always recommend this site to my students. I do not make it a requirement that they join but I include it on my course Syllabus as a valuable resource.

I have gotten great feedback from those who do use the site. Reading posts in the student nurses forum makes them realize that our school is and school policy is very much like all the other schools. It encourages them that their situation is not unique and that they can vent to people who really do understand what they are going through.

Another aspect they really appreciate is the fact that they can ask so many people for assistance for such a variety of topics.

I get a lot of ideas off of the student forums to help my students in clinical and class.
