Why the fanny packs?

I have a question for all you male nurses out there - and this is just out of pure curiousity. My coworkers and I (mostly women, I admit) were discussing this - WHY do male nurses wear fanny packs?
There are probably some fanny-pack-totin' female nurses out there, but we have mainly noticed the guys.
Better yet, WHAT IS IN THEM? lol
It's a mystery to us gals.

Can I take a guess? Since men are hotter than us they tend to not wear jackets like we do that have all those pockets. Also, male scrubs tend to be very basic (unlike mine which have cargo pockets and pockets at every turn).

I assume they have alcohol preps, pens, penlights, calipers...all the stuff you need to be a nurse.

That's just my guess.

Re: Why the fanny packs?

Um ... because they won't let me wear my toolbelt to work?

Seriously though - my hospital has more than 100 guys working in nursing and I've never seen anyone with one of those things.

Re: Why the fanny packs?

Lack of pockets on most men's scrubs.

Yes. There ain't no such thing as "too many pockets".
Not that I'd wear a fannypack I'd just "stitch" som'more pockets

cheers,

Re: Why the fanny packs?

They don't make those nice jackets like females have with all those pockets that match our scrubs. Only white lab coats and those are definately too hot to wear.

I don't see a lot of fanny packs (did you know fanny means vagina in British/Aussie talk?) where I work, and I do see more females with them than guys. I do see those scrubs that have the pockets down the legs. Next time I'm going to get me some of those.

I have a school kids pencil box full of stuff that I keep nearby, rather than wear a fanny pack. What a guy carries in his fanny pack is guy stuff, no need for you to know. LOL

Here is the definition of fanny pack from Wikipedia, the free encyclodedia;

A fanny pack [also called, in the USA, a *** bag (offensive slang), belt bag, butt bag, waist bag, belly bag or bum bag (in UK or Australia) is an accessory often worn by travelers. It is a small pouch-like bag that ties or snaps around the wearer's waist & usually contains a zipper that ties or snaps around the wearer's waist and usually contains a zipper. In addition to travelers, Wrestlemania champion Hulk Hogan often wears a fanny pack. The name differs because in the US the "fanny" is the butt, while in Commonwealth countries the "fanny" is the Vulva.

BTW, here are my thoughts after reading the above definition;
  1. I have never heard a fanny pack called a *** bag, nor will I ever do same.
  2. I prefer to use the term belt or waist bag, thus alleviating any possible association that I have a Vulva pack, LOL.
  3. The belt bag is kind of a Tool Pouch for Male RNs [& female nurses, too].
  4. It would be cool if Wikipedia included nurses [I've seen both male & female nurses wear the belt bag] along with Travelers & Hulk Hogan on the list of wearers of the belt bag. Go Hulk Hogan!
  5. BTW, no I don't own a Hulk Hogan lunch box, or a fanny pack. Yet, I think I'll order a belt bag online this morning.
