Hi there,

Due to a birth defect the hearing in my R ear is very poor. I can hear well enough that I've never needed any hearing aide type devices, but I've noticed that since I'm getting older (almost 34) that I'm asking "what?" or "huh?" alot. A person would not realize that I have hearing loss.

I'm very worried about being able to use a stethescope.
I figure that there has got to be nurses that work with hearing loss, so there
must be a good scope out there for me.

I'm a bit scared because my daughters friend brought a cheap, but real scope over with her to play with and I can't hear my heart!

Can anyone help / make a suggestion?

Hi! My friend is also hearing impaired in one ear (can't remember which one, though) from a birth defect. She uses Littmann Classic II, and she's doing fine.

Thanks so much for the links! WOW are they expensive though. I get vocational rehab benefits for my disability, maybe they will pay some of it since it is a need for my schooling.

Hi, a classmate of mine has hearing loss in one of her ears and she uses a Phillips electronic steth. She loves it. Good luck to you.

I was reading the an Ultrascope Classic (I think) was good for people with hearing problems. Try doing a search or go to rnsupply.com

I am deaf in my right ear only --- and ended up purchasing a Littman 4000 Electronic Stethoscope.

Clients don't even have to take shirt off in order for you to hear breath sounds.

Expensive -- Runs about US$425 - US$450. Believe me, blood pressure sounds are easy -- it's the breath sounds that get yah. And with this, you will definitely hear the beginning stages of atelectasis (that's where patients start getting fluid in their lungs due to being in bed for extended periods of time).

I have extremely impaired hearing in my left ear. I bought the stethescope kit that the school sold for new nursing students. I did get through, but it was tough. I just purchased a Littman I think it is the light weight one. It is amazing the difference! I am looking forward to using it next semester, and I have already been practicing on the folks in my house!

Depending on how severe your loss is, you may be able to use just a good stethescope. Many of the stores will let you try them before purchase.
