I am an RN and have recently transferred to the NICU. I need a stethoscope to use on the infants but some of these babies are quite small- 25 weekers and some weighing only 700 grams. I have read the comments about your stethoscopes and the majority of you seem to recommend the Littmann Cardiology lll or Littmann Master Cardiology. Since alot of these babies will have cardiac/pulmonary issues (PDA'S), I want a stethoscope that will pick up sounds well. My concern is due to the size of these patients will these 2 scopes be too big? I heard the Cardiology lll is a heavy one. Any suggestions?

I'm a NICU nurse, and I use a Littmann Classic II Infant stethoscope. I have never had a problem hearing murmurs with it. I think if you choose one of the Cardiology stethoscopes, you will find that they are too big. Most of my coworkers use an infant stethoscope, some have a pediatric size one. I don't know if you have started in your unit yet, but you might want to check and see if you even need your own. Some places issue each baby their own stethoscope on admission that stays at the bedside.

Definitely find out if the unit you're going to is one that issues each baby their own 'scope, or you use your own.

If you're using your own, start w/an infant size one. Littman is the best, of course, and there is only one model to pick from. Adscope makes an infant stethescope that is just fine, but cheaper.

If you already have one of those fancy Cardiology Littmans, why don't you use it for a while, see how things go, and what the other nurses are using, maybe try one of those out if they'll let you.
