hmmmm...maybe copper?
ok, i'll check it out, blue.

FWIW, copper's also a pretty soft metal so it's not too scratch resistant, even if it's alloyed to harden it up some. Almost certain to be cheaper than granite though 'cuz it's much easier to work with and can be a lot thinner.

good to know about the copper.
can't imagine it being more expensive than granite/quartz?
time to go looking for bargains.

leslie
Ok, so I did a little research of my own, and copper's not nearly as expensive as granite. Some places offered it at $120 sq/foot, plus installation.

Steve, if I wasn't well old enough to be your Mom, and happily married, I'd propose to you, too!!!

I am happy to say that my 26 yr old married son and his lovely wife have a 3 year old, live in DC (Army assisgnment) and are DEBT FREE! The boy was listening after all...

Sign me up too!

We have a small business and unfortunately debt is part of that.

We live in my husband's grandparents home, built in 1928. Need lots of work but it a cool old house.

I'm 51 and have seen lots of real estate highs and lows. I do hope being frugal comes back in style.

Gonna have to check out those recycled glass countertops. We have white steel cabinets with frosted glass (think 1950's) and glass countertops could blend right in.

i am going to check out the glass counter tops also, i had never heard of them before, my dd paid through the nose for a granite top but it is beautiful
copper would be beautiful also but it would be subject to denting and some acidic foods might stain, i odn't know about this so it is probably treated to prevent stains

blue, all of the recycled glass ones i've seen, have a concrete mix in them.
or, the only others were the glass mosaics, which are pretty but don't want a bumpy counter.

steve...
i read about copper also.
i should be ok if i got the .080 guage/thickness...
and they're bought in sheets.
the big $$ go out to the fabricators.

i'm really leaning towards the copper.

the experts are indeed saying, it's a softer metal than stainless...
but if you buy a commerical thickness, it will fare well.
and maintenance isn't too bad...
butcher's wax a couple of times a year.
the beauty of copper is that it's a natural antibacterial, and, as it ages, its patina only enhances its beauty....
scratches, dings and all.
i happen to love the 'distressed' look.

Check Vetrazzo or EnviroGlas (the latter has a link to pix from an episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition..)

My mother will be thrilled to hear I've had three proposals of marriage....

Funny how we ended up discussing home improvements and countertops...it's been interesting though!

i have an official dx of ADD.
so "off topic" is par for the course, for me.

blue, i will check it out...
because i don't care for the glass and concrete look.
