Chernobyl was an unmitigated disaster because the people working the reactors stepped over their bounds in "testing" the system.

The 'engineers' broke several core rules (including basic fundamental safety) in order to "test" 'what would happen if an 'external power failure' were to occur that would shut down the cooling pumps to the reactor(s).

There is much speculation as to why Chernobyl happened.... including why the directors to the plant signed notices that okayed the plant to service condition despite not being able to pass some fail safe tests - govt. pressure being the main culprit.

Just because Chernobyl happened doesn't mean nuclear power = bad. The world has dozens of nuclear power reactors in place supplying energy (France expecially) and the risks diminish with advancement in technology.

cheers,

Re: Mccain

Not "bad" but extreme care and double checks MUST be ensured.
No guessing.
No trusting others do as they should.

All possible precautions against human error and terrorism must be in place.
It is easy to forget that some are willing to die.
Others are in denial.

The root cause was a fundamentally flawed reactor design that was unique to the Soviets and was over 30 years old at the time of the accident. Quite simply, that incident could not have happened with the reactor design commonly in use around the world.

Yes, McCain loves America. As they say, however, love is blind. I don't want more blind love and blind patriotism. I want reason and rationalism and good judgment. I don't want more cowboy, maverick, flip 'em the bird, "bring it on" approach to the world. I want dialog, diplomacy, and coalition building.

I don't want someone of my father's generation; I want someone of my generation, someone who understands that the world and American society have changed.

The Reeps have held the Oval Office for most of the last 30 years. The last 8 years, especially, have been very bad. It's time for the Reeps to step aside for awhile. Yes, Mr. Obama brings some big negatives but since he's the only alternative to the Bushians continued representation in the Oval Office, Mr. Obama gets my vote (which, thanks to the electoral college, is meaningless anyway).

Roy, I think you're drastically understating the case.

There are several hundred nuke plants running around the world, most with several reactors. There are 66 plants running in the US alone.

The US Navy has at least 80 ships/boats that are powered by nuclear reactors.

Nuclear plants can be (and are) operated safely.

Let's also not forget about the enormous amount of radiation that is released by coal-fired power plants. I would far rather live 5 miles from a nuclear plant than 5 miles from a coal-fired plant.

More of the Sen. McCain shame file:

How bad was the McSame campaign this week?
Top economic advisor calls Americans "whiners".
McSame jokes about killing Iranians with tobacco.
He has a monumental answer Fail when asked about birth control.
He's dupes 300 economists into signing up with his economy destruction plan.
He called Social Security a "disgrace".
Iraqi leaders punk him out on withdrawal deadline.
He'll balance the budget in first, no, second term & gives no figures to back it up.
Changes a story to pander to the football team of whichever town he's in at the time.
He answers a question about Pittsburg, by detailing his POW interrogations.
But he would NEVER exploit his POW experience and hates talking about it.
and
"I'll do everything in my power to get those offshore reserves exploited... um, er, explored, discovered and um..."
& the cherry on top:
Obama releases radio ad that refers to McCain as 'McSame'.

Good idea to recap McCain's week, every week until Sept.

Re: Mccain

I, for one, am sick of hearing about McCain's POW years. Yes, it was an ordeal. Yes, he was very courageous. Yes, it was the honorable thing to do to to refuse release because his dad and granddad were Navy admirals.

On a personal level, as a former Marine, I respect the heck out that decision.

It really has little bearing on whether he should be president, though.

Re: Mccain

John McCain speaking of offshore oil reserves
(...they will be) explored and exploited and we will send the message ... all over the world that the United States is on the road to becoming independent from foreign oil.
Foreign-oil independence is a pipe dream.

Finding and/or expanding alternatives, as well as increasing the efficiency of existing oil-using machinery, are what will lead toward long-term, sustainable reductions. Adding 10 or 20 billion barrels to the world supply in 8-12 years is not likely to have a huge impact then... and NO impact NOW.
