hi everyone,

i recently recieved my preceptor request for my last semester of nursing school. we have been given a list of a bunch of very different units. there is a hiring freeze in my area, especially for new grads, so i feel like it would be in my best interest to start out inb med surg. can anyone recommend a quieter less chaotic area of meg-surg? i tend to be very organized and do not like the high stress and disorganization of a regular floor. i have been on a general med/surg floor and an ortho floor and really did not like either of them. i now have the choice of renal, neuro, cardia, oncology,gu/gi, trauma, and transplant. i was thinking maybe transplant, how does that measure up to a gen. med surg?

I would focus on getting as much experience as you can while you're in school. If you've already done med/surg and ortho, don't do med/surg again. Cardiac would be great experience, it would be great to have a little extra heart knowledge under your belt. Be ready for high stress and disorganization, it's all part of the game.

I've worked cardiac med-surg as a PCT, and I personally wonder how much strictly cardiac pt's that floor gets. The cardiac unit I was on was cardiac in name only, it was really a place for anything and everything (I personally liked it better that way, because I like variety).
